    Multi-Use Winnipesaukee River Trail
    The Need

High volume traffic on State Route 3 poses increasing hazard to pedestrians and non-motorized traffic. Individuals in the region identified a safe and scenic place to walk, ride a bike or cross-country ski.

    Actions
CCNTR helped with the development and funding for the Winnipesaukee River Trail Project, and the Greater Franklin Trails Association, as a nonprofit 501 C 3 corporation. Fund raising was begun and support from residents, businesses, foundations and federal grants helped to create a public green space, that stretches from Franklin through Tilton to Northfield.

CCNTR is working with other multi-use trail groups in Bristol, Belmont and Laconia. These groups have identified other corridors that will eventually be united with the Winnipesaukee River Trail to create a scenic and historic byway for pedestrians, skiers and bicyclists.

A trail-head - Trestle View Park is under development in downtown Franklin. Land donated by a local business will become a new green space in Franklin that initiates new trail users to the corridor, and creates a gathering place for group activities. Plans are also underway for several "put ins" for kayak enthusiasts. There are also park development plans underway on the Northfield and Tilton run.

    Involvement
The Franklin Chamber of Commerce and the Caring Community Network of the Twin Rivers initiated the Winnipesaukee Trail Project. Since the beginning of this project, community leaders, business people, outdoor enthusiasts, land-owners and municipal officers have worked together to create this regional green space. This project is funded by the Land and Water Conservation Trust, Department of Transportation T-21 Grants, community members and local businesses, and community groups.
